How to Use Adult Diapers in Pakistan — Complete Step-by-Step Guide for Caregivers

The first time a caregiver needs to apply an adult diaper to a patient or family member, it can feel intimidating — unfamiliar, awkward, and technically confusing. It gets easier very quickly. Within a week of regular practice, most caregivers find the process takes under five minutes and feels entirely natural.

Part A — How to Apply a Tape-Style (Tab) Diaper

Tape-style diapers are applied while the patient lies flat. They are the correct choice for bedridden patients, those recovering from surgery, and elderly patients who cannot stand.

1. Wash hands with soap and water. Put on disposable gloves.
2. Place a clean underpad flat on the bed under where the patient’s hips will rest.
3. Open the diaper fully and lay it flat with the soft (inner) side facing up. The tabs are at the back.
4. Ask or gently assist the patient to roll onto their side, facing away from you.
5. Slide the diaper under the patient with the back panel (tabs side) aligned to the small of the back. About one-third of the diaper should extend below the waist.
6. Gently roll the patient onto their back. The diaper should now lie beneath them.
7. Pull the front panel up between the legs and over the lower abdomen.
8. Unfasten the bottom tab on each side first, angling them slightly upward toward the navel. Then attach the top tabs.
9. Run a finger along the leg edges to ensure the leg cuffs are not folded under — they should stand upright against the thigh.
10. Check the fit: you should be able to fit two fingers under the waistband. Adjust tabs if too tight or loose.
11. Confirm the wetness indicator strip (usually yellow) is visible and centred.

Part B — How to Help an Elderly Person Put On Pull-Up Diapers

Pull-up diapers are for mobile patients who can stand briefly or sit upright.

12. Hold the pull-up with the absorbent side facing toward the patient. The back is usually higher or has a tag.
13. If the patient is seated: guide them to step into the leg openings one foot at a time while seated.
14. Pull the diaper up to mid-thigh, then have the patient stand (with support if needed) to pull it to waist height.
15. Adjust so the waistband sits flat and the crotch area is snug but comfortable.
16. Check that leg openings lie flat against the skin — not bunched or cutting in.

If unable to stand at all: Lay the patient flat, lay the pull-up flat under them like a tape diaper, and pull the sides up. This is less ideal but workable.

How to Change a Soiled Diaper

The process is identical to initial application, with these additional steps before putting on the clean diaper:

17. Put on gloves. Untape/remove the soiled diaper by rolling the patient or asking them to stand.
18. Fold the soiled diaper inward (waste side in) and set aside in a disposal bag.
19. Clean the skin thoroughly with wet wipes or damp cloth. Wipe front to back for female patients.
20. Pat skin dry — do not rub, as this damages already-sensitive skin.
21. Apply a thin layer of zinc oxide cream or Vaseline to buttocks and perineal area.
22. Apply the clean diaper following the steps above.
23. Seal and dispose of the soiled diaper immediately. Remove gloves and wash hands.
